Minutes of Meeting, June 2023

FRIENDS OF MARYON AND MARYON WILSON PARKS

Minutes of Meeting, June 2023

Venue:  Kinveachy Gardens, SE7

Date:  Thursday 15 June 2023

Present: (12) Christine (chair), Natalie (treasurer), Steve (secretary), Gulle, Catherine, Alan, Vanessa, John, Hazel, Mickey, Ronnie, Nigel.

1. Welcome and Apologies:  Christine welcomed the above.

 Apologies (1) Jason.

2. Minutes of previous meeting and matters arising: Accepted.

We requested flytipping notices on Thorntree Road and have finally been referred to the Council’s “street services”.

3, Green flag inspection in Maryon Park:

This took place on May 30th. Present were three council officers and three of our committee members. The inspector was particularly interested in trees and was quite critical, saying there were a lot of issues including dead trees and branches plus fallen ones. There are apparently problems for the Council with manpower and skilled labour. He mellowed a little later on.

The men’s toilets have been locked for some time and the women’s need cleaning. The time-scale for a decision on whether the green flag is renewed is unknown.

4.Other Parks and Council News

a)The visits to Maryon Wilson Park by children from Thorntree school for litter-picking and a tree walk went well, although there was not much litter to pick. The Council had supplied extra pickers, which we then returned. The school hopes to send one class per term in future. Thanks to the three members who helped – more help would be appreciated on future visits.

b) There have been early mornings when the top gate in Maryon Park has not been unlocked – equally annoying for those entering from the bottom and those attempting to go through from the top.

c) We will draw attention again to the bench that needs replacing near the Cemetery Lane entrance to Maryon Wilson.

d) A woman in the Maryon Park playground recently found two youngsters going through her bag, which was reported to the Safer Neighbourhood Team.

e) We will request replacement of the stencils about dog fouling which have now been worn away.

5. Planning for Picnic in the (Maryon) Park, Sunday June 25 (1pm-5pm).

This is again being organised by Greenwich Dance with a full programme. We will have a stall which will be set up from midday and there will be a Maryon Park trail with stickers as prizes. Do come and say hello.

6. Planning for sheep-shearing on Open Day, Saturday July 1 (10am-2pm).

The sheep in Maryon Wilson Park will be sheared on the above date, in a scaled down version of previous occasions. As the first couple of hours coincide with our monthly litter-pick, we will be based on the grass by the old toilet block and the deer pen. There will be a burger van and ice cream van on site.

7. Treasurer’s Report

After paying for the hire of room for our AGM, the current balance is £470.33.

8. Community Garden report:  (attached)

9. Any other business:

Best wishes to our members Ronnie and Nigel from Woodland Terrace, who are moving to Bexleyheath this week.

10. Diary dates:

Clear-Ups: Saturday July 1 for litter-picking or light parks work.

Next meeting: Thursday September 28th at Kinveachy Gardens, 7.15 for 7.30pm
